Duty calculator: work out duty and VAT on your imports
Enter the commodity code, country of origin and value. The calculator fetches the duty rate from the Swedish customs tariff, converts to Swedish kronor at the official exchange rate and shows what you pay, with and without a proof of origin.

How to work out duty and import VAT in four steps
The calculator does exactly this for you. If you want to understand the figures, or do the maths by hand, these are the four steps for all imports to Sweden from countries outside the EU.
Work out the customs value
The price of the goods plus freight and insurance up to the EU’s outer border, converted to kronor at Swedish Customs’ monthly rate. If the price is DAP or CIF, the freight is already included.
Customs value = price + freight + insurance
Look up the duty rate
The duty rate is governed by the commodity code and the country of origin. The third-country duty applies to everyone, but with a proof of origin from a country with a free trade agreement the rate is often 0%.
Duty = customs value × duty rate
Add any surcharges
Anti-dumping duty on certain goods from certain countries, a 50% additional duty on goods from Russia and Belarus, and excise duty on alcohol and tobacco.
+ anti-dumping + additional duty
Calculate the import VAT
The VAT is calculated on the customs value plus the duty plus the freight within the EU to the final destination. Normally 25%, for food 6% until the end of 2027.
VAT = (customs value + duty + EU freight) × VAT rate
Duty rates on common import goods
The third-country duty is the rate that applies without a proof of origin. Click Calculate and we fill in the calculator with the goods and a common country of origin, then you change the value to yours.

Commodity code
Duty rate (third country)
Third-country duty under the EU tariff, September 2026. Many of the goods become duty-free with a proof of origin from countries the EU has free trade agreements with, and tyres from China also carry anti-dumping duty. The calculator shows both parts. Don’t know the commodity code? Search the HS code for free.
Calculate your own shipmentWhat the calculator does not include
The calculator shows what is paid to Swedish Customs: duty, additional duty and import VAT. The full import cost often contains more items, and some goods require a manual calculation.
The forwarder’s clearance fee
DHL, UPS, FedEx and PostNord charge their own fee for declaring the shipment, often SEK 125 to 500 or a percentage of the duty. It goes to the forwarder, not the state.
Anti-dumping duty in kronor
The calculator warns when anti-dumping or countervailing duty applies, but the amount depends on the manufacturer and is sometimes a fixed amount per unit. We calculate it exactly for you.
Weight and quantity duty
Food, agricultural goods, wine and certain chemicals carry duty per kilo, litre or unit, sometimes combined with a percentage. The calculator then shows a warning instead of an amount.
Excise duties
Alcohol, tobacco, energy and certain chemicals in electronics are taxed on top of duty and VAT. Alcohol tax is charged per litre of pure alcohol and can be considerably larger than the duty.
Tariff quotas and licences
For some goods, a lower rate applies only within a quota allocated on a first-come basis. Others require an import licence or permit. The calculator flags quotas but cannot see whether there is room left.
Terminal and storage fees
If the goods get stuck in customs because of document errors, the port or terminal charges storage per day. A correct declaration from the start is the cheapest insurance.
Goods for SEK 10,000 and freight for SEK 1,000, duty rate 5%
The customs value becomes SEK 11,000. The duty is calculated on the customs value and the VAT on the customs value plus the duty, that is SEK 11,550. This is how the amount breaks down.
SEK 550
duty, 5% of the customs value of SEK 11,000
SEK 2,888
import VAT, 25% on SEK 11,550
SEK 3,438
to pay to Swedish Customs
If your company is VAT-registered, you do not pay the import VAT to Swedish Customs. You report it in your VAT return to the Swedish Tax Agency and deduct it at the same time, so the net cost in the example is the duty of SEK 550. Private individuals and companies without VAT registration pay the whole amount. Further reading: what duty costs in Sweden (in Swedish) and how import VAT works (in Swedish).

A proof of origin can zero the duty entirely
The EU has free trade agreements with Norway, the UK, Switzerland, Turkey (customs union), Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Canada and over 70 other countries. If the goods originate there, and you can prove it, the duty rate is often 0% instead of the third-country duty. That is why the calculator shows two amounts when an agreement exists.
The difference is money you either pay unnecessarily or save with the right document: a statement on origin on the invoice, a EUR.1 certificate or an A.TR for Turkey. If you have already paid too much, the duty can be reassessed up to three years back. Read more about proofs of origin, EUR.1 certificates and imports from Turkey with an A.TR.
SEK 131,000
back after a reassessment
The customer had for two years imported through a broker who never used the statement on origin. We requested a reassessment of the declarations and got the duty refunded. Read more about importing from the UK.
SEK 36,453
saved on one shipment
Stretch film with commodity code 3920 10 89 and 6.5% duty. With an A.TR certificate from the supplier, the duty became 0% and the customer saved the amount on the first shipment. Read more about importing from Turkey.
How to understand the charge from PostNord, DHL or UPS
If you have ordered something from a country outside the EU and received a notice with a “customs charge”, the amount consists of up to three parts. The calculator above shows the first two. The third is set by the carrier itself.
EasyTull is a customs broker for companies. As a private individual, contact the carrier with questions about the notice, and Swedish Customs if you believe the duty is wrong.
1
Duty
The commodity code’s duty rate times the value of the goods including freight. Many goods have 0%.
2
Import VAT
25% on the value of the goods, the freight and the duty. This is usually the largest part.
3
The carrier’s fee
The carrier’s own fee for declaring the parcel for you. It does not go to the state.
From calculation to finished declaration
The calculator gives you the figures. We make sure they are right in the declaration, that you do not pay duty unnecessarily and that the goods do not stand still.
Your own customs specialist
Send the calculation and the invoice. A customs specialist checks the code, the rate and the origin and gets back to you within 10 minutes, every day 07:00 to 23:00.
Origin rules that hold
We know which certificate applies to which agreement, what the supplier must write on the invoice and when a EUR.1 is needed. Right from the start, not a reassessment afterwards.
A finished declaration within 2 hours

Questions and answers about duty and import VAT
Can’t find the answer? Ask us, and a customs specialist replies.
Ask your questionHow do you work out duty?
Duty is calculated as the customs value times the duty rate. The customs value is the price of the goods plus freight and insurance up to the EU border, converted to kronor. The duty rate is set by the commodity code and the country of origin and is looked up in the tariff. Example: SEK 11,000 in customs value and 5% duty gives SEK 550 in duty.
What is the import VAT calculated on?
The import VAT is calculated on the customs value plus the duty plus incidental costs such as freight and handling within the EU up to the place of destination. The VAT rate is normally 25%. For food, 6% applies until 31 December 2027, and for books and certain other goods 12%.
Does my company have to pay the import VAT to Swedish Customs?
No. If the company is VAT-registered in Sweden, you report the import VAT in your VAT return to the Swedish Tax Agency and deduct it as input VAT in the same return. Swedish Customs only sets the base. The duty, however, is always paid to Swedish Customs. Private individuals and companies without VAT registration pay the VAT to Swedish Customs, in practice via the carrier.
Why does the calculator show two amounts?
When the EU has a free trade agreement with the country of origin, there are two duty rates: the third-country duty that applies without documents and the preferential duty that applies if the goods’ origin can be proven with a statement on origin, a EUR.1 or an A.TR. The calculator shows both so you see what the right document is worth.
What is the customs value?
The customs value is the value the duty is calculated on: the price you actually pay for the goods plus costs for transport, insurance and loading up to the EU’s outer border. Freight within the EU, discounts shown on the invoice and the Swedish VAT are not included. Which freight costs are already in the price is decided by the delivery term, the Incoterms.
Which exchange rate is used?
Swedish Customs sets a rate per currency valid for one calendar month at a time, based on the rate on the second-to-last Wednesday of the previous month. That is the rate the declaration is calculated at, not the daily rate or the rate on your invoice. The calculator uses Swedish Customs’ current monthly rate and shows it below the result.
What is anti-dumping duty?
An extra duty the EU imposes on goods sold below their normal price from a particular country, for example tyres, e-bikes, ceramics and steel products from China. The rate varies between manufacturers and can be both a percentage and a fixed amount per unit. The calculator warns when anti-dumping duty exists for your combination of goods and country.
Can the calculator handle all goods?
It calculates all goods with ad valorem duty, which is most industrial goods. For goods with duty per kilo, litre or unit, agricultural goods with an agricultural component and alcohol with excise duty, it shows a warning instead of an amount. We do those calculations for you free of charge.
I have received a customs charge from PostNord or DHL. Is it right?
The charge normally consists of duty, import VAT and the carrier’s own fee for declaring the parcel. Work out the duty and the VAT in the calculator and compare with the notice. If they differ, the rest is usually the carrier’s fee. Questions about the notice go to the carrier, and if you believe the duty is wrong you can request a reassessment from Swedish Customs. EasyTull helps companies with imports and declarations.
How reliable is the calculation?
The rates are fetched straight from the Swedish customs tariff and the exchange rates are Swedish Customs’ own, so for goods with ad valorem duty the amounts match the declaration. The uncertainty lies in the commodity code and the origin. The wrong code gives the wrong rate, and a proof of origin must exist for the preferential duty to apply. That is why we offer to confirm the calculation within 10 minutes.
